Award Winning Screenwriter & UCLA Extensions Instructor, Bill Boyle conducting a Screenwriting Lecture at:
The Fig Garden Library September 17th at 7:30 pm.
3071 East Bullard, Fresno CA, (559-438-4071)
Veteran screenwriter Bill Boyle is coming to Fresno to conduct a lecture and a series of workshops for local filmmaking community. The lecture is entitled “Respecting the Antagonist” and will take place at the Fig Garden Library on Thursday September 17th at 7:30 pm.
“The essence of true character conflict is not derived from the protagonist being right and the antagonist being wrong, but from both characters being right carried to an inevitable conclusion. Villains and unsympathetic characters don't consider themselves evil. They like everyone else is doing the very best they can given their fears, needs, knowledge, skills, pain, and personal history. It is the hero that offers us the journey and the objective of the story, but it is the antagonist that creates the drama. A great antagonist makes us squirm not because of the opposition he represents but because there is a truth behind his position that makes us uncomfortable. It is the antagonist that forces both the hero as well as us to confront out shadow side.”
The screenwriting workshops will take place at the Fresno Arts Council Boardroom on Sept. 18th (evening) and all day Sept. 19th. There are three workshops; Basic Screening, The Visual Mindscape of the Screenplay and Marketing the Screenplay.
A separate Press Release on the workshops will follow.

“I am thrilled at the dynamic group of individuals in this city committed to establishing a film industry in Fresno. Establishing crews and an infrastructure through servicing outside productions is essential and that appears to be happening here. But If the community is serious about establishing a permanent indigenous film industry in Fresno that has long term viability it is paramount that an effort be made to develop the ‘creatives’ of the industry; writers, actors and directors. It is through the ‘creatives’ that home grown production is established.”
Bill has had four screenplays produced with two more presently under option. Additional information on the films can be found at www.allthatsky.ca. or at www.imdb.com
Bill Boyle’s feature screenplays have received multiple awards and recognition including: • Palm Springs Film Festival Critics Choice • Atlantic City Film Festival Audience Choice • Toronto Reel World Festival Best Canadian Feature • ACTRA nomination for Best Dramatic Writer • Canadian Film Awards Finalist • Recipient of the Harold Greenberg Fund • Chicago Film Festival Special Jury Nomination.
